East End Summer’s Top Food Discovery

Seafood and frogs legs, burgers and bison, corn and sassafras tea. The Shinnecock Powwow has been a cornucopia of edible offerings all weekend long, a mix of traditional fare and offerings more common to summertime events such as hot dogs and sodas. As the chow-down comes to a close on this last day of the 65th annual powwow, the most memorable is, without competition, the Fry Bread.

Indian Frybread

There's Never Enough Frybread to Go Around!

Indian Fry Bread—or Frybread, depending on who’s doing the spelling—is a big part of many American Indian cultures, a flat dough fried in oil that somehow comes out lighter than other fried-dough creations found at so many festivals and fairs. And frybread proves much more versatile. Topped with fruit or honey or powdered sugar, it puts the more common zepole and funnel cake to shame, but when used as the base for an Indian Taco or wrapped around a bison hot dog in place of a boring old bun, it becomes a transcendent culinary experience.

I’d love to continue to rhapsodize, but there’s not much time left to go back and get a few more!
