The Sunlight Only Diet Does Not Work Out For A Swiss Woman

So we are at that point, are we? Literally, grown human beings—with educations, we assume—are seriously able to be convinced that they can live on sunlight…and sunlight alone.

Zurich newspaper Tages-Anzeiger has reported that an unnamed woman in her 50s decided to follow a diet in 2010 that consisted of not eating and sitting in sunlight. She made this decision after watching an Austrian documentary about an Indian guru who claims to have lived that way for 70 years.

If you know me, you know that I get angry about people being put on serious news networks and interviewed as “experts” and giving advice that is clearly moronic. The other day I was angry about a broadcast that said sugar was poisonous. I get angry when I see people advocating a no-carb diet, or when health experts go on television and advise that tap water could kill you. I get furious when I watch “reality” television.

It’s called lying, folks. People do it a lot. And a woman died, it appears, because she got duped into believing that a human being can live only on sunlight after she saw a documentary about it on television that was presented as real.

The people that made that documentary should face legal consequences.

People are responsible for their own actions, and if they are foolish enough to try some crazy “diet” without asking a doctor first, it is their own fault not TV’s or anybody else’s. Should McDonald’s face legal consequences if people get fat eating fast food, or even die because they eat nothing but? Of course not. And your anger is misplace if you are angry at people talking about diets or what is dangerous or not dangerous to consume. It is the responsibility of each of us to take care of ourselves, to be cautious when caution is called for. It is a sad thing if, in fact, this woman you write of died because she tried this diet, but it is nobody’s fault but her own.

Yea I agree with you on this, it is her fault.

But I’m sick of real authorities giving completely wrong information that is clearly being given to benefit themselves.

You have people out there eating an all meat diet because Doctors are now telling people carbs are bad and make you fat, when we all know that is not true. You had grown-ups with families getting mortgages they couldn’t afford because financial authorities told them it was a great idea, the list goes on. You have an entire generation of kids burdoned by an impossible debt because they were told to go to college to study philosophy. You’re right, people need to be able to think for themselves and take responsibility for their actions, but the culture is not turning that way, there needs to be a culture of leadership in America, not followers, and there is simply too much of the latter lately, and it’s pretty much the entire crux of our problems.
