I’m Totally In Favor Of Bowhunting To Control Deer

Recently, the Town of East Hampton has been considering to use bowhunting as a method of controlling the deer population and just yesterday, they got a letter from PETA asking them not to do that. The letter said, “Bowhunting is among the cruelest forms of,” the email, signed by Jodi Minion, a wildlife biologist with PETA. “Bowhunters often spend hours following bloody tracks before finding wounded deer. Many are not found, and their deaths are slow and painful as it can take weeks for them to succumb to their injuries. Families are then torn apart, and young and weak animals starve or die of dehydration.”

PETA suggested to the Town that they use other methods such as scare tactics to control deer populations, which included using loud radios and water sprinklers.

I’m almost always in favor of PETA and their recommendations for animals. But the deer population is out of control and bow hunting helps control them. Water sprinklers? Is this a joke?

I don’t mean to sound harsh, but people bow hunt. It’s a nice activity and when deer are shot and tracked, I’d say 90 percent of the time the hunter is able to track it down. To me, deer hunting and fishing are in the same category.

So no, I can’t agree with using sprinklers and radios to control the deer population. This is a real problem and the solutions are as simple as doing a great American activity. Furthermore, it’s not like these deer go to waste, every hunter that hunts deer either keeps the meat for himself or gives it away. Life and death is a part of nature. Bow hunting isn’t cruel, packing animals into factory farms is cruel, but bow hunting isn’t.

I knew a professional hunter in Sag Harbor for several years. His comments about this was always the same “experienced” bow hunters ONLY. Other wise it is painful and cruel for the deer as people out “joy hunting” who are not experienced with the bow and arrow will injure the deer not kill it – As I recall there were certain spots you needed to aim for to kill the deer quickly and as painlessly as possible. Of course I don’t know that getting hit by a car and running off into the woods to die a slow painful death is any better than bow hunting and since the population is so out of control that is what is happening. I am however a BIG supporter of what Fire Island did – BIRTH CONTROL – they shot the deer with a birth control drug and from friends who have homes on fire island I hear it’s been a huge success.

I think your purpose is right but the way you want to do is wrong. its ok that we should control the population but its wrong we must kill them. We just get them and sent them in forest department instead to kill them.

It baffles me an adult can write something this stupid. I…I…I can’t… I just can’t even process this.

Where is this guy shooting wild life ? Afghanistan ? Men with dangerous weapons, do not belong in our communities. This is not the Wild West of yesteryear. He should be wearing a bright orange vest where aloud to shoot wildlife. Seems to me this outfit is great to wear on private property, so as not to be seen as a trespasser. In my opinion, real hunters go upstate where there is a danger of being hunted after also. The deer should be trapped, then processed. Sterilization should be used also, to control the deer population. It is time to end this madness. Killing our precious wildlife for what ? The so-called sport of it ? Toying with these creatures at the expense of others is cruel and inhumane. If we have to kill animals to help put meat on the table, as some say… then this means our country is truly in deep dodo.

You just aren’t living in reality here. A lot of people own guns and weapons legally in our community and are completely law abiding citizens.

Sterilization? Trapping them? Are you kidding me? Do you hear yourself right now?

Dennis, the shot is not taken by us or even on Long Island. It’s just an image we used to illustrate the post…

Bow hunting is a great idea until an arrow hits you kid or flies through your window or car.
Get real–this is LI not Alaska.

    • David Rattiner David Rattiner says:

So what’s your plan then? Oh wait I know what it is, we need to have fifty million in tax dollars go towards the “The Public Administration For Deer Control On Long Island” so that they can study why there are so many deer for the next ten years.

Yes it is Long Island, and there are a lot of hunters around here, and last time I checked people all over planet earth have been hunting animals for food and population control, not just Alaska.

Your kid comment is so low it disgusts me. You can make that excuse about anything. By your logic we should no longer have cars because kids crash in them, we should no longer have bricks because kids fall on them, and we should no longer have bicycles because kids hurt themselves on them. What about baseballs? Maybe make that illegal too? After all, kids get hit in the head and die from baseballs all the time, it happens every day right? Just as much as an arrow I’d bet.

      You sir, are a banana.
