The following is a reported story about an incident that took place during the massive traffic jam in the Hamptons after a car accident took place on Country Road 39.
According to the Southampton Police Department, three women got into a confrontation with a 60-year-old-man and beat him unconscious after a traffic dispute.
At 7 p.m., on the corner of Hill Street and Lee Avenue, the 3 women who were driving in a blue Nissan Maxima and were all dressed in bathing suits, attempted to pass around the 60-year-old man in the middle of the dead stop traffic. The man told the women not to pass him and an argument broke out. The women then exited their vehicle in the middle of the road as did the 60-year-old man, and they began to physically attack him by surrounding him and kicking and punching him.
When I first heard about this, if I’m honest with you, I actually laughed about it because it just seemed so absurd to me, but these three women beat this poor man, who has asked not to be identified, so severely that he needed to be driven to the hospital when police arrived and needed to be woken up after receiving so many blows to his head. The man admitted that he began the argument by not allowing them to pass. The women got away and no license plate number was obtained.
I don’t even know what to say.
What the hell is happening out there? These kinds of incidents are no longer isolated incidents in the Hamptons this summer.
The other day I was driving through Sagaponack and there were two cyclist directly in the middle of the road blocking traffic four cars back. When I pulled up next to the cyclist on the wrong side of the road I yelled out to him, “YOU’RE COMPLETELY BLOCKING TRAFFIC!”
His response was an immediate explicative. I said to him, “YOU’RE GOING TO KILL SOMEBODY OR KILL YOURSELF!”
He gave me the finger and then I just shook my head and drove away. What else can you do?

David
I was rushing home the other morning, late for work and trying to get some medicine for a friend of mine who was laid up at home very sick – I had left it at my house by mistake when I went over to make her breakfast and help her get up and set for the day. I turned onto my road from Noyac road and immediately ran into a blockage – a Riverhead Building Supply HUGE truck delivering sheet rock to a neighbor of mine and some sort of gas tank company (not sure which) with the guys under the truck cause the starter wasn’t working. Long story short – ONE of these trucks pulled up right alongside the other and WITH FULL KNOWLEDGE of what they were doing and blocked our little side street, wouldn’t have killed either of them to stagger their parking so there was some way to squeeze a car down the road – now there is access from the other end but that required that I back out on to a very busy Noyac Road. There was no warning for me when I turned onto my road that I’d be stuck. I was furious. I asked the RBS truck to move and his reply was “this wasn’t my fault lady” I again asked him to move so I could get by and he ignored me – so that is when the expletive’s began- I dropped a few F bombs, he flipped me off and called me a nasty name, backed out into ridiculous traffic and drove around – but really WHAT are people thinking blocking a road for ANY reason? It’s not even ugly August yet and I can tell you I’ve been ugly already.
Not everyone reacts with an informed attitude… the more common response contains the universal hand signal followed by some random expletive. In essence: Not everyone is that smart… most people are dumb.
David, This has been the worst summer I can recall in my 50 years in Southampton.I see crazy drivers ignoring traffic signs,Speeding on CR39, Blowing horns,”U-Turns” in the middle of Main St,Bicyclists riding in the traffic lane and not moving into the BIKE LANE.Look at someone and you get the finger,Hold a door for a Lady and its like,” it your job”, No Thank you coming from her! My new next door neighbor puts up a stockade fence and plants highly invastive bamboo on the property line to block the view, and refuses to remove it.WOW ,And its only July!
Somebody should put up more, “Be Nice” signs.
