Let me be clear. This is not an endorsement for Mitt Romney on behalf of Dan’s Papers, anyone associated with Dan’s Papers, our parent company, any of our advertising partners, the guys sitting next to me, the woman I was on line with at the bagel store this morning—it’s only who I personally am voting for. That’s it. And I’m voting for Mitt Romney today. After giving a lot of thought to this election, I’ve come to the conclusion that while Barack Obama has been extremely inspiring to see as my president, I think Mitt Romney is the better choice this election.
My reason for voting for Romney this election has entirely to do with his fiscal viewpoint.Barack Obama has an inability to make difficult decisions regarding monetary policy, and I feel that Mitt Romney will make these difficult decisions.
Barack Obama has been effective at letting the world know that America can change, that we won’t put up with somebody like George W. Bush, who spent wildly while making extreme tax cuts. Barack Obama has made that embarrassment a part of our past—however, he simply can’t avoid swiping the credit card, and he needs to avoid it.
I believe that less government is what America needs right now, not more, and I think that Mitt Romney gets that and Barack Obama doesn’t. Barack Obama doesn’t understand that America grows weaker the more we spend ourselves into China, just like George Bush didn’t get it. Both of them are were/are out-of-control spenders, they just spent on different things.
I’m fairly confident that Mitt Romney will overspend, mainly through political pressure, but I also think that he will live in financial reality and recognize the dangers of overspending, the dangers of too much government and the dangers of debt spirals. He will spend on things that are not necessary, but he will spend less, without a doubt in my mind, compared to Barack Obama. We need that, desperately in America. We need a leader that will stop the credit card lifestyle of the federal government.
I’m guessing that this will not be a popular post with much of my liberal readership in the Hamptons. But Mitt Romney is not George W. Bush. I don’t see him sending America down the path of a military state like George Bush did, and I don’t see him sending America down the path of a nanny state like Barack Obama is. I see him promoting business. And if you look around today, if there is one thing America needs, it’s more business, not more social security offices.
P.S. I’m still in huge favor of Tim Bishop and will be voting for him.

David I don’t know you well enough to say you are a child of privilege, or that you think with your wallet or that you’re just naive – so I won’t. However, I will say I am disappointed, I’m also upset that on Facebook it does sort of appear that Dan’s Papers is endorsing Romney and that was something I really felt smacked in the face by. As a woman I cannot fathom having a vice president who’s views on rape are as backwards as Ryan’s are and that’s just scratching the surface in my many reasons for NOT voting for Romney.
Our President has not been “swiping the credit card” as you claim he’s been trying to restore the support systems needed in this country that were stripped away by Bush. Trying to re-invigorate the economy, fighting to get anything passed thru the republican blockades. When was the last time this country was flush and doing well? Clinton. Who is more like Clinton? Romney or Obama? You might be comfortable turning the clock back to the 1950′s by trying to help Romney get elected but I am comforted by the simple fact that in NY State your vote simply won’t count – and if it did mine will balance it out and since I’m married we’re ONE UP for Obama unless you have a girl friend who’s still talking to you after hearing you’re voting for Romney and has agreed to follow suit.
Sandy, thank you for this response and the way you worded it, I know you’re just joking with your comments at the end, but I appreciate the calmness in your voice.
First off, regarding child of privilege, I grew up from a divorced family in Springs riddled with financial problems. I’ll leave it at that. I currently do not have financial problems. I am not voting with my wallet. Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, whoever wins, won’t effect my tax rate.
Regarding the social issues that the Republicans stand for, I do not like most of them. I believe in gay marriage and I’m hugely in favor of having well financed government programs that make sense such as schools and police. I’m not in favor of making cuts to these things.
Regarding Romney’s view on rape, this is a non-issue that the media just exploded. Obviously he’s against rape. Regarding abortion, I’m with Biden on this one. I personally am pro-life, but don’t wish to force it on others.
So, why am I voting Romney?
The simple truth for me is that both Bush and Obama have been spending this country into the ground. Government spending, as you point out, does not stimulate the economy, it has stagnated it. The spending both men have done have brought us dangerously close to the fall of dominance our country has with the dollar. If the dollar becomes a currency that is no longer the world’s reserve due to our wreckless spending, it won’t matter who the hell is in charge of America, because our influence will be weak.
I have a problem with spending money we don’t have. I’ve seen the destruction spending money you don’t have has had on people that I’ve known over the years. I do not want to see that destruction in my country. Look at what happened to East Hampton? Or to our cities for that matter who’s governments have over spent. It’s remarkably destructive. I just don’t understand why it’s so hard to find politicians who get that it’s bad for everybody when they borrow money to run their towns, cities or country. It’s a bad thing, and quite honestly, no matter who wins this election, America is going to have to face the music financially, and it’s not going to be pretty.
None of the social viewpoints, policies, or anything else matters if one day the money isn’t there to pay for massive Government. A lot of people think that this is something that can’t happen in America. Right…just like real estate never goes down…just like it is impossible to happen in Greece, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Ireland, Japan, the Roman Empire, the list goes on and on…Just like we’ll never see five dollar a gallon gas…
I want responsible spending. Obama is the opposite of that. It’s an excuse that he had to spend in order to save us. If banks failed, others would have started up. If GM failed, another car company would have started. That’s the way Capitalism works, the other way, the bad way, is the road we’ve been on.
Investment + innovation = stimulates the economy. Obama wants to invest in innovative new companies that keep jobs in the US. You will be eating your hat, Dan. Go Bishop, and bring that investment stimulus money to the East End!
That money is being flushed down the toilet and all that’s happeneing is we are perpetually asking for more. It’s very selfish, and we are already seeing its effects on the increases in prices as wages remain stagnant.
I really hope I’m wrong, but I can’t live in a fantasy.
I’m very happy about Bishop. If Romney won, I’d still be fearful with the behavior of the governments fiscal policy. Both sides are guilty I just don’t want to reward it with my vote. A child can understand that spending money we don’t have by borrowing is crazy.
I give you credit for going public with such a private matter, President Obama won re-election. Better luck in four years. Thank god Tim Bishop won, he is a very good man. Hopefully the tax increase for income over $250,000 per year won’t sting you and your co-workers at Dan’s Papers.
