II went skiing yesterday with a group of six friends at Shawnee Mountain in Pennsylvania. Things didn’t go so well.
I haven’t been skiing for about five years, but yesterday, the second I got on the slopes it immediately came back to me. I was skiing at the level that I’ve always been within 10 minutes of the first run.
By the middle of the day I was flying effortlessly down some black diamond trails, and on the last run, right before I intended to write, a kid, maybe 12 years old, cut in front of me on his snowboard right across my skis, sending me flying through the air, and then shoulder-first into an ice patch. I immediately heard a snap, there was no pain, and I thought for sure I had broken my neck.
When I wiggled my feet and fingers, I felt relieved. The kid that crashed was fine. He asked me if I was okay, and that’s when I could feel a bone sticking out through my skin on my left side. Then the ache started to set in. “I don’t think so. I think I need to get the hospital.
I pulled my shirt down so the people that surrounded me could look at my neck and immediately they all winced in disgust. Suddenly I was that guy getting hauled off the mountain on a sled and going to the hospital in an ambulance. At the hospital, I was quickly suped up with morphine, given x-rays and a sling and then I zonked out until today.
So that’s my story for missing my post yesderday. It’s the only day I’ve missed since I started this blog, and I apologize. One-handed typing, I will say, is a lot slower then I remember.
You can view a picture of my x-ray below or on my Twitter page.
