After the Opening Night festivities, the first full day at the Hamptons International Film Festival means a full slate of big-name celebrities, powerful documentaries, quirky short films and more in movie theaters from Southampton to Montauk. We wish there was time to see every single one, but here are five pre-screening favorites hitting the theaters today:
Another Happy Day (Guild Hall, 2 p.m.)—A family wedding sends a high-strung woman (Ellen Barkin) into the midst of the dysfunctional dynamics of her crazy clan (including Kate Bosworth, Demi Moore, Ellen Burstyn and Thomas Haden Church). Another good reason to consider eloping.
Blood in the Mobile (UA East Hampton, 9:45 p.m.)—This documentary explores the real price people are paying in the traffic of the “blood minerals” used to build nearly every cellular device known to man. Let’s see what Suri has to say about this one.
The Good Doctor (UA East Hampton 5 p.m.)—Orlando Bloom plays doctor with an 18-year-old patient who may not be as sick as she thinks she is—and whose not-so-good doc may be sicker in the head than she could imagine.
Butter (UA Southampton, 7 p.m.)—It’s not just for popcorn anymore. Ty Burrell, Jennifer Garner, Alicia Silverstone, Olivia Wilde and Hugh Jackman put art, politics and nonfat living on the table in this dark comedy about the world of Midwest competitive butter-carving. Spread the word.
Hell (Montauk Movie Theater, 8 p.m.)—In a post-apocalyptic world with little food or water, two sisters make us think about loyalty and faith. And if we should have taken An Inconvenient Truth a little more seriously.
