The hot new Hamptons accessory—at least by Hollywood standards—has arrived. A sexy new TV drama, single-word title staring with an R, driven by a mysterious blonde beauty who changes her identity, descends upon the Hamptons and unleashes a torrent of chaos. All while looking really chic, of course.
Ringer and Sarah Michelle Gellar fired the first salvo on the CW last week, but that was just a dip in the East End waters. Tonight’s premiere of Revenge on ABC is where we’ll all get to see how the Hamptons really plays, and is portrayed, on a bigger stage.
A reimagining of The Count of Monte Cristo by way of Montauk Highway, Revenge takes us into the soapy world of a lovely young woman (played by the lovely Emily Van Camp), who immerses herself in a Hamptons crowd to exact…wait for it…revenge on the wealthy baddies who brought down her dad years ago. “Revenge is such a great story engine,” said show creator and executive producer Mike Kelly. And not just for Van Camp, but for viewers looking for vicarious payback on issues a whole lot bigger than not being able to score a table at Nick & Toni’s.
The fabulous parties and throngs of people equally fabulous are all there (even if some of the locations have never been seen by anyone who’s ever been east of Riverhead—or north of North Carolina, for that matter), but mingling with the Hamptons elite is only part of the appeal, according to one of the stars.
“We’re dealing in a particular time right now in American history where I think the average American is going to want to see a takedown of the rich,” said Revenge costar Madeleine Stowe. If it’s happening on the TV version of the Hamptons, at least everyone will look great while it happens.
