Thanks to the popular lyric, “525,600 minutes” we can try to figure out creative ways to “measure a year.” RENT, the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical and movie, was in theaters in 2005 and the musical ended its 12 years on Broadway in 2008. The Manhattan, East Village set was perfect for the cast to portray the ins and outs of the city. Eight bohemians were forced to cope with love, life, money and A.I.D.S. Trying to cope with the epidemic, the cast grew together through the struggles while also dealing with the loss of a dear friend.
Because of the musical’s’ many reviews, elevated popularity and tremendous applause throughout the years, we know Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp quite well. Bay Street Theatre, at 1 Bay Street in Sag Harbor, is proud to host these gentlemen on Monday, June 13 at 8 p.m. These cast members have been on a National Concert Tour, which previewed in San Francisco, Manhattan, Port Washington, New York, Irvine, California and even Japan. Bay Street will be the only stop for Pascal and Rapp on the East End.
Mark Cohen, Anthony Rapp’s character in RENT, was a struggling Jewish filmmaker. He was also dealing with his break-up with Maureen, who left him for another woman, Joanne.
Roger Davis, Adam Pascal’s character, an H.I.V. positive, ex-junkie rock musician – who happens to be Cohen’s roommate – is also Mimi’s love interest. All of the characters are intertwined in one way or another and they all have something to reflect on.
Before RENT, Rapp had been in many popular productions. Films such as, Dazed and Confused, A Beautiful Mind and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown featured a few of his notable performances.
You can expect Rapp to perform well-known pop songs such as, “Losing My Religion” and original pieces from his award winning Off-Broadway show, Without You.
Pascal is offering original material as well as Broadway standards, such as “Maria” and “Not A Day Goes By,” as well as classics from West Side Story and Cats.
The concert will feature solo sets, duets, RENT songs and more with a full band. An interesting aspect of the concert is story telling. The stars will look back on what it was like to work on Jonathan Larsen’s Pulitzer Prize winning musical RENT.
