East End Classic Boat Society Spring Open House
Saturday, April 28, noon to 3 p.m, Community Boat Shop, 301 Bluff Road, Amagansett
The East End Classic Boat Society—dedicated to sustaining the skills and traditions of small wood boat building and restoration on the East End—welcomes all to its Community Boat Shop. Volunteer members of the society will be on hand to explain and demonstrate how they are building a Swampscott dory; discuss their restoration of a Herreshoff 12.5 that was built in 1921; and how you can build your own kayak. Other classic sail and rowboats will be on display.
LongHouse Reserve Rites of Spring Season Opening
Saturday, April 28, 2–7 p.m., Longhouse Reserve, 133 Hands Creek Road, East Hampton
The LongHouse Reserve (LHR) will kick off its Spring Season continuing its 21-year tradition of offering patrons exciting opportunities to experience a number of unique, dramatic art forms. The Rites of Spring event will feature new works by artists Jene Highstein, Annue Chu, Ronald Bladen, Judith Shea, Daniel Wiener, Bonnie Rychlak and Roy Lichetenstein. Guests can view the new and existing sculptural works while strolling through the magnificent grounds, tour the Pavilion’s vessel collections, and participate in lectures throughout the season, which concludes on October 7, 2012.
Additionally, this season will feature exciting lectures and tours. On May 3–7, LongHouse Reserve patrons will be able to experience collections in the Tour of Northwest Arkansas: A Celebration of Crystal Bridges Museum. On June 11th, Longhouse will host its fifth Student Annual. On June 23rd, LongHouse Reserve will once again host Planters On & Off the Ground; judged this year by April Gornik, Fred Stelle and Ina Garten. And, of course, the much anticipated Summer Benefit, honoring President of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, Dorothy Lichtenstein, and avant garde visionary, Robert Wilson, will take place on July 21st.
Friends of Long Pond Greenbelt Celebrate Rachel Carson

Do you become reverent when you hear the name Rachel Carson? Do you wish you knew more about her talents and her indomitable spirit? Perhaps you have forgotten her pivotal role in the modern environmental movement. Are you curious about the remarkable woman who wrote what Chief Justice William O. Douglas called “the most important chronicle of the 20th century for the human race?” If so, you will want to join East End environmental enthusiasts and activists to honor the 50th anniversary of the publication of Carson’s Silent Spring, the book often credited with single-handedly kick-starting the modern environmental movement.
To honor Carson’s outstanding gifts as scientist and author and to pay homage to the environmental accomplishments in our unique region in the 50 years since Silent Spring was published, a very special afternoon has been planned at Vineyard Field in Bridgehampton. As Part of its 15th Anniversary Year, Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt invites you to celebrate the life and work of this esteemed conservationist and crusading environmental pioneer. Spring Long Island Restaurant Week Ends!
If you haven’t yet indulged in the glory of Long Island Restaurant Week, Sunday is your last chance! Participating Long Island restaurants offer a three-course prix fixe for $24.95 all night, every night they are open—except Saturday, when the menu must only be offered until 7 p.m. Each restaurant will serve its own unique $24.95 menu with a minimum choice of three appetizers, three entrées and three desserts.
