Classic Boat Fair & Maritime Art Show

The East End Classic Boat Society will have it’s annual Classic Boat Fair and Maritime Art Show rain or shine this weekend at its Community Boat Shop on Bluff Road in Amagansett. The Classic Boat Fair will feature all of the boats built by the East End Classic Boat Society since it’s inception in 1998 (as well as boats built prior), while the Maritime Art Show inside the Community Boat Shop will feature paintings and photography from more than 60 East End artists.
Bridgehampton Whalers Exhibit Opening
Friday, July 13, 5–7 p.m., William Corwith House, 2368 Montauk Highway Bridgehampton
The second of two summer exhibits will be opening at the Bridgehampton Historical Society’s Corwith House. This exhibit celebrates local men who went to sea to hunt whales, most of whom came back to farm. Using excerpts from whaling logs, art work by Claus Hoie, furniture once belonging to whaling captains, scrimshaw, and exotic mementos brought back from around the world, the danger, excitement and rewards of hunting the whale is revealed. The exhibit will remain on display Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., until October 1.
MBFA Exhibit and Reception for Artist Ed Moses

Mark Borghi Fine Art will host a pre-awards reception for legendary Los Angeles based artist and ArtHamptons’ 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Ed Moses. Beebe Windmill Open House

BHHS is proud to be the key-holder of the Beebe Windmill—one of 11 that survive on Long Island. It was built in 1820 for a retired whaling captain and shipbuilder, and has moved many times and had many owners. At this open house, you’ll learn more about the windmill’s history and operation and take advantage of the unique opportunity to climb inside during a shady half hour on a summer day. Free admission.

The public is invited to explore five private gardens in Cutchogue, East Hampton, Mattituck and Montauk, open to benefit the Garden Conservancy. Highlights include Peconic Bay Creek, Lake Montauk and ocean views, multi-level decks and terraces, sculpture collections, hundreds of container plantings, a tiki hut of exotic plants, hemlock and privet hedges protecting edibles and favorite plants, a meadow garden, and croquet lawn.No reservations are required, and the event is rain or shine. PowerPlay, A Sculpture Park Opening Event

Featuring over 25 emerging and established artists from the East End and New York City, this participatory-based programming highlights sculpture, installations, performance, sound and video. POWERPLAY is a sculpture of experiences curated by Molly Morgan Weiss and The City Firm. POWERPLAY invites the viewer to question the value system of power and how it is interpreted within the American psyche. The exhibition confronts the dualities between natural and man made energy, as well as being a part of a global community versus an ethnocentric one. The themes explored are alternative energy, holistic practices, science, space exploration, food, technology, spirituality, sexuality, wealth, beauty, ritual and human interaction. Pianofest in the Hamptons Presents “We Love A Piano”

“We Love A Piano,” a musical benefit party to support the Pianofest scholarship fund. The featured artist is Broadway star Melissa Errico, who will be accompanied by her father, pianist Michael Errico. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served in the Museum garden. Guests will enjoy the Museum, good company and a special concert by the dazzling, Tony-nominated Ms. Errico. The program includes songs by Irving Berlin, Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers and Hart, Burton Lane and more. An array of young Pianofest artists will play before and after Ms. Errico’s cabaret performance. Unstuck in Time: Journey Through Kurt Vonnegut’s Life & Novels

Gregory Sumner reads from his latest book, Unstuck in Time: Journey Through Kurt Vonnegut’s Life & Novels. Sumner guides us through a biography of 15 of Kurt Vonnegut’s best known works, to illustrate the quintessential American writer’s profound engagement with the “American Dream” in its various forms. Sumner’s portrait of Vonnegut captures his resistance to celebrating the traditional values of the “American Dream”— ambition, success, individualism. Instead, we read and share Vonnegut’s empathy for those who struggle under the weight of the survival-of-the-fittest mentality. Heroic and tragic, Vonnegut’s novels reflect the pain of his own life’s experiences, relieved by small acts of kindness, friendship, and love. Vonnegut illuminates another way of living, an alternative American Dream, which is why we keep returning to his books.
South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo)—Vineyard Field in Summer: A Vibrant, Grassland Ecosystem

The grasslands of Vineyard Field, the field behind the SoFo museum, represent a significant and vanishing habitat. For the past seven years, the Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt has made great strides in maintaining, and in some cases restoring the health of this rare ecosystem, which is comprised of ponds, wetlands, wildflowers, and native grasslands, and is home to many rare and endangered native plants, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. On this second in a series of seasonal walks in the Field (the first took place in the spring), join experienced naturalist Jim Ash as you explore this area—preserved by the Town of Southampton—and learn about its importance to the well-being of our environment. A third walk will take place in the fall. *Reservations are required for all walks, workshops, and programs* There is no charge for SoFo Members (unless otherwise stated); Non-members $7 per adult; $5 per child.
