The Parrish Art Museum is holding its annual two-day horticulture event and fundraiser this weekend, entitled “Landscape Pleasures: Inside/Outside.” Four celebrated interior designers will participate in this year’s event. Scheduled for Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, the program will kick off with a Saturday morning symposium, from 9 a.m to 12:30 p.m., featuring talks by designers Mario Buatta, Alexa Hampton, Charlotte Moss and William Sofield. On Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., four of the most spectacular gardens in the area – all owned by interior designers – will be open to participants for self-guided tours.
The symposium will begin with a talk by interior designer Alexa Hampton, President and head designer of Mark Hampton LLC, entitled “Organic Inspirations.” She will discuss how gardens and landscapes are reflected in her design approach to certain rooms. Next, William Sofield will present “Of Leaves and Landscapes – Planning for the Past” at 10 a.m. He will explore the decision-making process in constructing a garden, and how much of the landscape surrounding a building appears to be controlled. Sofield has created over 400 stores for the Gucci Group, and has also worked on projects for David Barton Gyms, and celebrities Sean “Diddy” Combs and Nathan Lane.
At 11:15 a.m. designer Charlotte Moss will present “A Garden Scrapbook…Journeys, Memories, and Revelations.” During her 25-year career, Moss has designed private residences as well as collections of fabric, furniture, carpet, china, home fragrance and decorative accessories, all of which have been inspired by garden influences.
Internationally-renowned designer Mario Buatta will conclude the symposium with “Bringing the Outdoors In.” Buatta will discuss ways to give your interiors the colors of nature’s gardens and how interiors, like a garden, are constantly growing.
A book signing by all four designers will conclude the symposium on Saturday.
Participants in the Landscape Pleasures event can take self-guided garden tours on Sunday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. On display will be John Barman and Kelly Graham’s tranquil landscape on historic Sagg Main Street, Steven Gambrel’s charming park-like grounds in Sag Harbor, Tony Ingrao and Randy Kemper’s remarkable landscape in East Hampton Village, and William Sofield and Dennis Anderson’s historic Gothic home and lush grounds in Southampton.
In addition, Sponsors, Patrons, and Benefactors of the event (at the $350 level and up) are also invited to attend a private cocktail party on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Redcraft, a late 19th-century, red-bricked, Arts-and-Crafts-style home on Ox Pasture Road in Southampton. Landscape architect Perry Guillot recently updated the grounds and park plantings of this four-acre property, including the elaborate walled garden that will be resplendent in early summer bloom.
The Parrish Art Museum was founded in 1897 in Southampton. It celebrates the artistic legacy of the East End and its reverberation throughout the world. Since the mid-1950s, the Parrish has grown from a small village art gallery into an important museum with a collection of more than 2,600 works of art from the 19th century to the present. In mid-2012, the Parrish will move to a new 34,500-square-foot building in Water Mill designed by internationally- acclaimed architects Herzog & de Meuron.
