Illegal Hunting at Morton Wildlife Reserve?

It’s hunting season on the East End, which means that in marked places, hunters can go off into the woods with guns and track deer.

But we’ve heard from numerous sources that there may be illegal hunting going on at Morton Wildlife Reserve. Our understanding of the law is that it is illegal to hunt there, yet we’ve now heard from several readers who live nearby that they are hearing gunshots in the early morning at the preserve.

Do we have this wrong? Or is it legal to hunt in a wildlife reserve during hunting season? Or maybe it’s only target practice…

David, in my opinion most of our wildlife animals on Eastern Long Island are domesticated… like farm stock…pets. Those that go out shooting or bowing( bowing can be very cruel – should be banned ) I call them animal shooters. Real hunters go upstate where it is a challenge and danger evolved. Besides that, who wants someone with a dangerous weapon in our back yard.
Killing our precious wild life for the so-called sport of it, is madness.
Also, I’d like to add, reintroducing wild turkeys to Long Island was one big blunder. From their open natural habitat in Pennsylvania, to the hostile environment and very populated Long Island, is another act of cruelty to wildlife.
Venison ? With all the year round browsing the deer do ingesting herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and who knows what else… no thanks, you can have my portion.
