Lower Speed Limits in Westhampton Beach?

Westhampton Beach drivers may have to move a little slower this year.

Rogers Avenue, Rogers Avenue Extension, Hazelwood Avenue and Bridle Path may soon see their speed limits dropped from 35 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour, according to 27east.com. Responding to a petition of local residents complaining of high-speed traffic on those streets—which are north and east of where Old Riverhead Road and Montauk Highway intersect—the Westhampton Beach Village Board opened a public hearing through most of this month to give the public a chance to weigh in on the matter.

The hearing was opened during the board’s last meeting on Thursday, January 4, and the public may share comments, support, opposition and concerns about the possible speed limit reductions until the board’s next work session on Wednesday, January 23 at 7 p.m.

If the measure is approved, Rogers Avenue, the Rogers Avenue Extension and Hazelwood Avenue would be changed first, followed by Bridle Path three months hence.

I can’t imagine this having any major impact. 5mph won’t make much of a difference. This afternoon on Montauk Hwy, I was behind a school bus that was doing 55 in a 40 mph area AND there were children standing in the back of the bus. And, yes, I did report it to the bus company, while I was patiently waiting for the children to get safely off the bus.

I don’t know if this matters to your point, but the change would lower the speed limit by 10 mph, not 5 mph…
