Everybody Lost Their Mind at the Willie Nelson Concert Yesterday, but They Were Polite About it

Yesterday in Montauk there was no other word on the street except for Willie Nelson concert at The Surf Lodge. While there was a lot of fear that things would get out of hand, they were happily squashed as the crowds came by boat, car and feet, but for the most part, kept a happy and good vibe.

As the event progressed, parties started to spring up all over Montauk, with the entire town alive with energy, even with those people who did not attend. Willie Nelson infected the entire town with positive energy.

Surf Lodge owner Jayma Cardoso said the, “Traffic situation was a non-issue. We worked with the police department and they did so much to help monitor traffic. We also did a lot of work with cones and designating place for people to park.”

Even Montauk resident Jimmy Buffett showed up to the concert  to play, almost blessing the Surf Lodge which has been consistently been the subject of a lot of criticism for overcrowding over the years, as a place that can be called local. “We knew Jimmy was coming,” said Cardoso, ”He’s attended shows in the past, we had hints that he might want to perform with WIllie, but we didn’t know that they were going to perform so many songs together. Willie and Jimmy really just connected, you’d have thought they had been practicing together, but it’s a case of just two incredible artists just making magic together.”

It was a sight to see all of the people on little boats who invaded the Surf Lodge like a small Navy, “I think they had more fun than anyone. They all tied up together. It was like a mini-community and you could feel they formed a bond on the water beyond tying up together. They were also avid Willie fans, they were singing along with all of his songs,” Mr. Cardoso said.

And it was all in the name of raising money locally. In regards to both the event itself and the fundraising that it provided. The event was enormously successful. “Huge success, we raised over $20,000 for the Montauk Playhouse. Giving back to the community is one of our top priorities. Also, just to have a legend like Willie Nelson play in Montauk and having the community and guests have a chance to experience a living legend perform, is something really special to me. I couldn’t be prouder that we were able to put a show like this together and I want to thank the Montauk Police and Fire Department in helping to make the event all come together and keeping everyone safe. I also hope guests still send donations to the Montauk Playhouse, it’s a chance to really help a great community organization that benefits Montauk. And, I can’t say enough about Willie and Jimmy it’s like witnessing history. Willie, is just one of the most amazing artists I’ve ever seen, his storytelling via his music is unbelievable,” Cardoso said.

According to police reports, there were no arrests that were related to the concert.

What a life it is out here. What a life.

Calvin Klein and Nick Gruber Back On?

According to the New York Post, Southampton resident Calvin Klein has reconciled with ex-boyfriend Nick Gruber. They broke up in January 2012, but the pair recently vacationed together in Mexico.

The 23-year-old former model and Klein dated for two years before calling it quits last year after Gruber had some serious legal troubles. The young hunk was linked romantically to Girls Gone Wild beauty Chelsea Heath after his breakup with Klein last July, and, more recently, was seen with another “Klein” of the fashion world, French designer Lloyd Klein, in Hollywood. Gruber also told Page Six that he had written a tell-all book about Klein and their relationship—Obsession: My Life With Calvin Klein—but there’s no word on whether or not the book will still be released after this apparent reconciliation in Mexico.

Hamptons gossip maven Steven Gaines (and Sharon Churcher) published a similarly titled tome, Obsession: The Lives and Times of Calvin Klein (Avon Books), back in May of 1995.

Katie Couric Interviews Howard Stern on “Katie”

Southampton resident Howard Stern chatted with East Hampton’s Katie Couric on her daytime talk show Katie last week. The pair discussed Stern’s career, his many neuroses and his relationship with Beth Ostrosky, his wife of 13 years.

In a typical move for Stern, he turned the interview on Couric and got her to reveal that fellow Hamptonite Matt Lauer was considered as a cohost for her daytime show. Couric also denied ever sleeping with Lauer. “I love Matt, but we really do have a brother-sister type relationship,” Couric said.

Stern has returned as a judge on this season of America’s Got Talent on NBC. The shock jock is joined by Howie Mandel and new judges this season Mel B, formerly Scary Spice in the Spice Girls, and supermodel and television host Heidi Klum. The season premiered on Tuesday, June 4 and Episode 2 airs Tuesday at 9 p.m.

Watch a video of Stern getting Couric to reveal intimate details about herself below.

Derwood Hodgegrass Installs Caviar Machines

Local bon vivant and billionaire Derwood Hodgegrass has secured caviar vending machines for his Southampton mansion, which also serves as an exclusive club for many of the Hamptons‘ most elite residents.

“In the past I’ve served some lovely golden Ossetra to my guests, but it’s not always enough,” Hodgegrass said on Saturday. ”I’m a man of means, but serving Beluga is just not within the budget.”

Hodgegrass installed three caviar vendors, including one with cheaper roe in the pool house, one on his expansive patio and another within the mansion itself. One machine even features silver serving bowls and other accessories.

So far guests have taken the move in stride, our South O’ spies report. For the sum of just $15,000 per summer, Hodgegrass provides his members with most every desire, no matter how decadent, so most have been pretty easy going about this minor, added expense.

It’s well worth all the pleasures of Hodgegrass mansion, one guest explained.

The Hetrick-Martin Institute’s “School’s Out” Party On Further Lane

Last night I headed over to the annual “School’s Out” benefit for the Hetrick-Martin Institute on Further Lane in East Hampton at the home of Peter Wilson and Scott Sanders. HMI is one of those programs that is unique, but the second you hear about what they do, you realize how important they are.

The Hetrick-Martin Institute  is a place that creates a supportive and caring environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth between the ages of 12 and 24 and their families. It’s a program that is much needed for young people who are going through one of the most difficult times in their life, and it offers them a place of understanding, welcomeness and belonging in a world where there are few resources who really understand what they are going through.

The party was held on Further Lane under a large white tent at the absolutely stunning home of the hosts, and was filled with volunteers who are remarkably passionate about the program. “It’s just one of those things that really makes an impact on young people’s lives. For these kids to be able to have a place where they can seek advice and support from people who understand them is huge,” said one volunteer.

HMI has so many supporters that at one point, it seemed like it was difficult for the organizers of the event to keep track of them all. “It’s an absolutely wonderful problem to have. It’s great to have so many people realize the valuable services that HMI does for so many kids,”Chandler Bazemore, the Associate Director of Development for HMI, said.

And you could see their supporters in action last night, with Mini-Cooper, a big supporter of HMI, providing shuttle service to and from the party using a fleet of their cars with professional drivers picking up guests and driving them to the estate from the parking lot at Two Mile Hollow Beach in East Hampton.

The Hetrick-Martin Institute is a year-round operation and provides its youth members (whether they are enrolled in school or not) a wide range of group activities designed to develop social and interpersonal skills and build confidence. Last year our After-School Department reached more than 2,000 LGBTQ youth and their families.

At the party last night, it was clear that HMI not only is impacting families and kids in a big way, but also has an impact emotionally on those who support the program who perhaps wish they had such a program while they were growing up and are so thankful that they can provide a program of this nature to the next generation.

Despite a howling storm that whipped through New York Harbor, toppling trees in Battery Park, just moments before guests of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor Awards were set to board ferries, the gala evening honoring the contributions of a variety of Americans to our country went off with military precision and without incident. While the celebrity attendees were greeted warmly by all, Dame Kennedy was swarmed by high-ranking military, including a half dozen generals who applauded her efforts to help Iraq & Afghanistan wounded veterans reconnect, readjust and rejoin their civilian lives via family events that make up for all of their missed holidays while on deployment. As the couture clad Kennedy quipped to one medal laden officer, “It was easier than I thought, making the transition from ballet slippers to combat boots.”
