Renting Your House for One Week in the Hamptons Is a Crime

There is a law in Southampton that says you cannot rent your house out to another person for 29 days or less. It was written in 2007 and the entire purpose of the law was to prevent massive share house parties from happening. The logic was that people who rent for the short term are most likely people who are party people and would cause a disturbance to the area. In 2007 real estate in the United States was at an all time high and was just beginning to collapse.

It’s now 2013, and I think it is safe to say that this law doesn’t make sense anymore. People who rent in the Hamptons on a short term basis are for the most part very normal people and not share house people. A few years ago, it was certainly the case that people who rented for the short term were wild and crazy, but that’s because back then anybody with a social security number could buy a home, and anybody who owned a home could borrow money against it and afford any rental in the Hamptons they wanted. Things have changed.

Today, a lot of people want to be in the Hamptons, but they simply can’t afford to be out here all summer long. They can afford a month in a gorgeous house, or a week, but that’s it. They are professionals, many times with families and kids, and it is absolutely INSANE that it is on the law books today that it’s illegal to rent to them for the short term.

Fight the people who pack 100 kids into a home and party all week and destroy the neighborhood. Don’t punish people who are looking to have a nice vacation in the Hamptons and don’t punish the local homeowners out here who have mortgages to pay and need the extra money but can’t afford to give up their houses for the entire summer.

Christie Brinkley Selling Parents’ Home in Sag Harbor

Hamptons resident supermodel Christie Brinkley is selling her parents’ home in Sag Harbor, according to the New York Post.

Brinkley listed the three-bedroom waterfront cottage for $2.8 million nearly a year after losing both her stepfather Don and mother Marjorie in July and September, respectively, of 2012. The house, located on West Water Street and overlooking Sag Harbor Cove in the Village, is listed with Elliman Real Estate, and Brinkley told friends that she hopes it will go to someone special.

A rep for the local actress and model told Page Six that Brinkley also owns a couple of properties “up the road” from her late parents’ home.

Sag Harbor Farmers’ Market Opening Soon

The Sag Harbor Farmers’ Market is returning for the summer in less than two weeks. To kick off the season and show their appreciation of the Village of Sag Harbor and the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the organizers have scheduled a vine cutting ceremony for opening day on Saturday, May 18. The popular local market will continue to operate from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Saturday through October.

Early produce season has already begun on the East End, so look out for a variety of nutrient rich, locally harvested vegetables such as asparagus, mushrooms, oregano, kale, beets, carrots, arugula, chard, garlic scapes, scallions and more. Customers can also expect other delectable homemade and locally grown foods such as empanadas, breads, baked goods, preserves, wine, coffee, raw honey, grass-fed beef, artisanal cheese, yogurt, butter, cow’s milk (vat pasteurized), local fish and farm fresh eggs.

This year, customers will find new vendors and old favorites, including Donna McCue‘s Fat Ass Fudge (as seen on ABC‘s Shark Tank), Mary Woltz‘s Bees’ Needs honey (once per month), locally grown mushrooms by Dave Fulkowski‘s Open Minded Organics, True Blue Jamaican fair trade coffee from Dennis Doherty, Amagansett Sea Salt, Blue Duck Bakery and, one of the new additions, Sweet ‘tauk lemonade.

For a complete list of vendors, visit sagharborfarmersmarket.org or find the Sag Harbor Farmers’ Market on Facebook.

The market will also feature weekly activities, such as presentations about nutrition and health, cooking demos and more.

Some of the market’s vendors are WIC (a federally-funded health and nutrition program for women, infants, and children) certified, and customers can now pay using virtual food stamps and Electronic Transfer Benefits (EBT), a system supported by the USDA that utilizes a processing machine to swipe credit cards.

By supporting the East End community farmers and artisans, the Sag Harbor Farmers’ Market helps the local economy and provides a vast array of delicious and nutritious foods. The market, located on Bay Street (at Burke St. in front of the Breakwater Yacht Club) in Sag Harbor, opens Saturday, May 18 and will continue to operate every Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., through October.

My Grandpa Alan Rattiner Was the Man Back in the Day While Being a Montauk Firefighter

It has never really hit me until today, my grandfather Alan Rattiner was one very cool dude. He moved out to Montauk when Montauk was nothing, and opened White’s Pharmacy at the Plaza. He started a family, becoming one of the only Jewish families in the VERY Catholic Montauk.

He was a very tall guy, standing over six feet, and played the saxaphone. His pharmacy did well enough to keep everybody happy—my grandmother didn’t have to work (except at the pharmacy) and raised my dad and aunt in Montauk. The business was sold, but they kept the building, which my dad and aunt still own today.

I bring him up because today I got a wonderful text from Richard Lewin, one of our photographers here at Dan’s Papers, and he sent me the picture above. My grandfather‘s name stands on the wall at the Montauk Fire Department and will remain there forever. Back in the day, and I would argue even today, the Montauk Fire Department was one of the most exclusive groups of people in Montauk and my Grandfather was able to break the mold, being at that time the only Jew in the fire department.

The wall at the Montauk Fire Department is known as The Wall of Honor. Richard explained it to me over the telephone: “There is a wall of honor in the entry vestibule at the MFD, which honors members who have passed away. It has every historic Montauk family name, most of whom I have known in my 32 years living there. As Honorary Department Chief, I was especially touched to read the names.”

I never knew him. He had severe Parkinson’s late in life and I have no memory of him without it. But man do I wish that I did, because the more I learn about him, the more I want to be like him.

Pay attention to your roots, not only will it make you feel good, it will inspire you to do more.

Thank for this picture, Richard!

LIGALY Honors Southampton’s Edie Windsor

On Friday, May 10, Long Island Gay And Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) will hold its 20th Anniversary Gala and honor Southampton resident Edie Windsor—a central figure in the fight to abolish the Defense of Marriage Act—US Congresswoman and Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, former LIGALY board president Andy Stern and Roberta Kaplan, Windsor‘s attorney in the DOMA case.

The event, which celebrates 20 years of education, advocacy and support for Long Island‘s GLBT youth, is from 6–11 p.m. at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage State Park.

Windsor is the petitioner in the forthcoming landmark United States Supreme Court case challenging the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage ActWindsor v. United States. Having prevailed at the District Court and the Second Circuit, Windsor‘s case was finally argued before the US Supreme Court on March 27, 2013.

On May 22, 2007, after more than 40 years together, Windsor and her longtime partner Thea Spyer were legally married in Toronto, Canada. They met in Greenwich Village in 1963 and had been engaged since 1967. Windsor and Spyer‘s decades-long relationship was the subject of a documentary, Edith and Thea: A Very Long Engagement, released in 2009, the same year Spyer died from Multiple Sclerosis.

Despite their marriage in Canada, Windsor, as executor of Spyer‘s estate, was forced to pay $350,000 in federal estate taxes due to DOMA, including taxes on gifts that Spyer gave Windsor over their many years together. Windsor then met attorney Roberta Kaplan, who agreed to take the case in conjunction with the American Civil Liberties Union, and the landmark court cases followed.

Windsor lives in New York City and Southampton.  She and Spyer were longtime supporters of The Network’s East End Gay Organization, and Windsor hosts a fundraiser for The Network‘s work on the East End each year.

Anderson Cooper Gets “Swatted” in Quiogue

Quiogue celebrity newsman Anderson Cooper was victim to one of the latest idiotic trends, “Celebrity Swatting,” last month when someone called 911 and falsely reported that a man had shot his wife at Cooper‘s St. George Place address.

The hoax, perpetrated on April 4, brought police cruisers from four local agencies to the scene, according to Westhampton / Hampton Bays Patch. Local police are now seeking to charge the hoaxer, whose call wasted police time and public tax dollars in more than one municipality. Cooper was not in the Hamptons at the time of the incident.

Celebrity Swatting” is a new trend where pranksters call in fake crimes with the goal of bringing SWAT teams and police to celebrity homes. Ryan Seacrest, Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus and Russell Brand are among the stars who have been victim to the false reports in recent months.

Gunshots Interrupt Jennifer Lopez Interview in FL

Hamptons resident Jennifer Lopez was in the midst of an interview with Rob Marciano from Entertainment Tonight on Sunday in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida when gunshots were heard in the vicinity. The interview was immediately stopped and Lopez‘s security team quickly rushed her to safety.

While the facts surrounding the gunfire are unknown at the moment, the shots were not related to the interview and Lopez is fine. JLo took time from producing her next music video for “Live It Up,” together with the pop star Pitbull, to give ET the interview, which was temporarily paused after the shots rang out. Both Pitbull and Lopez‘s boyfriend Casper Smart were on scene, but were not being interviewed at the time.

Marciano tweeted that he could hear and see ambulances converging in the area.

The “Live It Up” single is scheduled for release tomorrow, May 8.
