Waldbaum's Closes 6 Stores On Long Island, The Twinkie Is Bankrupt, WHAT IS GOING ON???!!!
I have food on the brain this morning after reading about Hostess Brands declaring bankruptcy. The company behind Twinkies and Ding Dongs became overleveraged and subsequently not-profitable.
How this is possible sort of boggles my mind, because I can’t imagine the American diet without a Twinkie or a Ding Dong every once in a while. But maybe this no carb thing has caught on so bad that things that I’ve always viewed as guaranteed to always be there, could disappear.
Take cereal for example. Across all fronts, sales of cereal boxes, as well as pasta boxes, are down, and the reason is because people don’t want the carbs. Egg sales are up. So is cheese.
I’ll never understand the low-carb diet. They should call it the low food diet, because any time I’ve ever been on the low-carb diet, I simply ate less because I couldn’t find anything to eat around lunch time and by the third day, I was pretty disgusted with myself having a pound of hamburger meat for dinner.
I had a bit of a panic attack when I heard that Hostess was going under. Recently on Long Island, Waldbaums stores have been closing all over the place. If the recession gets so bad that food companies go out of business then Houston, we have a problem. After all, we need to eat. Well at least some of us need to eat, other people in America could quite frankly use a diet of zero food for a month and they would still be obese.
Maybe the recession is the solution to all of our health problems. Maybe, if all of these major companies continue to suffer financially, there just won’t be much food to go around. There is a very serious school of thought in economic right now that the agriculture business is in real trouble. The reason? We just don’t have that many American farmers any more and nobody is picking up the slack. Very serious investors, including investment legend Jim Rogers, are predicting a major agricultural crisis that will send food prices soaring.
Like we don’t have enough to worry about these days.
In the mean time, you don’t have to panic, the Twinkie will remain in our bellies for the time being. Hostess, although declaring bankruptcy, will still be operating its business as usual. After all, there is still money to be made in the Twinkie business.
