Historian Dr. Kathleen Velsor reads from The Underground Railroad on Long Island: Friends in Freedom at Canio’s Books

On Saturday, March 9 at 5 p.m. Professor Kathleen Velsor will speak about her new book The Underground Railroad on Long Island: Friends in Freedom just published by The History Press. From the arrival of the Quakers in the 17th century to enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, Long Island played an important role in the Underground Railroad’s work to guide slaves to freedom. Professor Velsor’s new book tells the story of this dramatic period in our history.
Kathleen Velsor is author of the childrens’ historical novel Brother and Me which she wrote while researching the Underground Railroad. She is author of books about the Underground Railroad in Queens, and historical articles which appeared in the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society Journal. Dr. Velsor teaches undergraduate courses in the Department of Elementary Education and Literacy. She lives with her family in Bayville.
