Tour Leader: Ray Hartjen.

This is a rare opportunity to visit a working boat shop, where the smell of freshly cut wood greets you as you walk in. Traditional boat building is nearly a lost art, yet here in a shop near the ocean on the East End of Long Island you have an opportunity to witness rough sawn lumber being carefully laid out, sawn twice, and planed down to form the planks of a 12 foot sailing/rowing boat.
This shop, manned entirely by volunteers, is in its fourth year of operation. In addition to witnessing a boat being planked, you will have an opportunity to watch a canoe paddle being cut from locally grown and harvested Sassafras. Making the shaft of a paddle round, from the square stock, requires a lot of careful planning. Here, you will have an opportunity to take a plane in hand and help to shape this newly created paddle. Extra square shafts will be available so that all who participate in this visit will have an opportunity to actually shape some wood. Limited enrollment, reserve now.

Reservations are required for all events. Participants must call (631) 537-9735 for reservations and information about meeting places.
