Hanukah begins at sundown on Saturday – December 8, when the first of eight candles will be lit. Another is added each successive night until all are lighted. Hanukah (also known as The Festival of Lights) commemorates the rededication of the Second Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. . Temple Adas Israel’s Annual Hanukah Party will be held on Sunday December 9th at 4 PM. It is open to all ages and the community is welcome. Guests are invited to bring their own Menorahs to be lighted during the event.
A new feature this year is a Latke Cook-Off! The maker of the tastiest latke (potato pancake) will receive a prize. Anyone wishing to participate in the contest is asked to contact the Temple office for contest guidelines (info@TempleAdasIsrael.org or call 631-725-0904). The festivities will include traditional Hanukah fare … music, dancing, dreidel games, face painting and jelly doughnuts (also known as soufganiyot).
Also, new this year, the Temple has been selling Hanukah candles with some of the proceeds going to children in our community in need of winter clothing. Donations of new rain or snow boots in children’s sizes xxxx would be greatly appreciated. They can be brought to the party, or dropped off at the Temple to be delivered to the kids.
