Third Annual Shelter Island Turkey Plunge
Crescent Beach, shelter island, Shelter Island, NY. 11964.
The Third Annual Shelter Island Turkey Plunge will take place at Crescent Beach on Shelter Island. This benefit event is sponsored by the Friends of the Shelter Island Public Library, an organization that raises funds to support special and capital projects for the Library. Last year the event was attended by over 250 plungers and spectators and raised over $18,000 for the library. According to Sue Hine, President of the Friends group, “This event is so much fun and raises money at the same time!”
Folks are encouraged to wear costumes and have fun, while supporting your local public library. “We’ll be freezin’ for a reason!” says Library Director, Denise DiPaolo.
Those who wish to “Take the Plunge” may sign up at the library beginning Monday, October 15. Plungers will receive a packet which includes tips on how to get sponsors and raise money. If you are not interested in plunging, you can sponsor a “plunger.” A full list of registered participants is posted at the library. Those who prefer to sign up on “Plunge Day” register for a twenty- five dollar donation.
At the Plunge, awards will be given out for best costume, most money raised, most spirited, youngest plunger, oldest plunger, longest time in the water and much more.
