Home By Susan Smith

I found our little farmhouse when I idly entered an open house in ’08. We were not looking to buy anything. This was just before Leaman’s collapse, but we were as jittery as anyone else . “It’s just right. It has perfect light”, I said to my husband.

We can’t be there all the time, but just the idea of my home, where I am really happy, is almost as important as the reality. A minor character in Edith Wharton’ gorgeous ‘The House of Mirth’, has to traipse the money swollen hotspots of Europe, smoothing the way for the newly rich and ugly mannered to break into the caste of the 400. What she thinks of constantly and runs to when possible is her home – a simple little cottage on Long Island.
